Welcome to Captiva Fire Control District
The Captiva Island Fire Control District is a combination professional and volunteer fire district. With a full time paid staff of eleven personnel as well as eight volunteer members, we proudly serve our community. Our facility, built in 1980, houses a lieutenant and two firefighters per shift. Our Fire Chief and Captain work forty-hour workweeks and maintain availability at all times. The Captiva Island Fire Control District provides services including emergency medical care, fire suppression, fire inspections, public education and marine rescues.
The Captiva Island Fire Control District is an independent taxing district that is part of un-incorporated Lee County. Three Fire Commissioners who are elected by the community govern the District.
Founded in 1955 as a full volunteer department, the department recruited members of the local community to provide fire protection. With the hiring of the Districts first full time Fire Chief, John Bates, the department began to move forward in and transition to a full time paid fire department. The department began with a staff of three full time employees who oversaw the numerous volunteers and ensured professional care to island residents and visitors twenty-four hours a day and three hundred sixty-five days a year. The department is continuing to grow to provide the highest quality service to island residents and visitors.
